ENSURING A SAFE HOTEL STAY WHILE TRAVELING DURING COVID

As you book your vacations for the June-July school holiday season, you may be experiencing some anxiety around the COVID-19 cases increasing and how to remain as safe as possible.

In our previous blog, ‘Travel to Africa during COVID-19’ we provided advice on ethical and responsible travel during the pandemic. It is also important to consider safety when in your hotel which is what we have in store in this article. If you follow the same protocol you would as when staying at home or in a hotel, guest house or self-catering accommodation, you will most likely have a lovely stay.

To ensure that your holiday is as relaxing as possible, our Global Travel Alliance team has compiled some top tips to keep you safe when staying in a hotel:

CONFIRMED THAT THE HOTEL IS APPROVED

When on your local ‘staycation’ it’s important to check that your hotel of choice is following the COVID-19 guidelines. The Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) has implemented comprehensive measures that accommodation providers must follow. They will receive a certification after the programme has been completed and recorded which is all in line with the World Travel and Tourism Council’s (WTTC) guidelines. This is to allow you to rest assured that the South African tourism and hospitality industry is working tirelessly to keep you and your family safe during this time.

Remember that you have a clear understanding of the protocols in your selected accommodation as ultimately every traveler has a personal responsibility to ensure the health and safety of our fellow South Africans.

WEAR YOUR SAFETY MASK WHEN IN PUBLIC AREAS

When in public it is mandatory to wear your mask – which includes covering your nose and mouth!

Be sure to pack extra masks for when you run out of disposable masks or when your original ones are in the wash. Within the comforts of your sanitized hotel room with the guest you intended on staying with it is perfectly okay to remove your mask. Also, be sure to wash your hands regularly especially when touching your face or mask.

YOUR HOTEL MAY LOOK DIFFERENT DURING COVID - 19

Small tweaks can ensure your overall winter vacation is more relaxing and does not threaten your health. We recommend having lots of fresh air ventilate the room by opening all the windows and doors if possible, to ensure movement of air. It is also advised to ask housekeeping to minimize their services in the room by leaving fresh supplies and towels outside the door to reduce the risk of contracting the virus. The same principle of minimizing direct contact with hotel staff by carrying your own luggage or opting for the stairs rather than the lift where possible.

SOME CHANGES TO YOUR ACCOMMODATION CAN INCLUDE:
  • Temperature scans upon entering premises and compulsory use of hand sanitiser.
  • Many hotels have removed shared stationary from rooms. • Reduced buffet-style dining.
  • You’ll be asked to complete and sign a health questionnaire.
  • Thorough staff training on COVID-19 preventative measures, with educational signage for both staff and guests.
  • Staff wearing PPE.
  • Social distancing in public areas, including dining areas.
  • Guests may opt for room service if they feel more comfortable doing so.
  • Kitchens and other facilities may close earlier.

We highly recommend during this time to consider supporting small businesses by staying there for a night or two – if they are COVID-19 protocol compliant. This includes staying in a chalet at Club Mykonos or a small resort or backpackers for a few days while on a self-drive safari tour.
